What is a Nurse Practitioner?
Nurse Practitioners are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). A Nurse Practitioner (NP) has the experience, expertise and authority to diagnose and treat people of all ages with a variety of acute or chronic health conditions.
They can prescribe medication, provide pathology, radiology request, medical certificates, and referrals to specialists as necessary.
Nurse Practitioners have been providing nursing care to all sectors of the Australian community for more than 20 years. NPs offer high levels of clinically focused, autonomous health care for both acute and chronic conditions, in a variety of contexts. This includes across all geographic locations in Australia and within all settings including aged care, primary care, mental health, private practice and hospital care.
In many healthcare settings, Nurse Practitioners serve as primary care providers, managing a wide array of health issues and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive comprehensive and coordinated care. Their unique blend of clinical expertise, preventive care focus, and personalised approach makes them valuable contributors to the healthcare team.
What evidence is there for a NP Led Service?
Nurse Practitioners contribution to the improvement of quality patient care has had a substantial impact on the health of people globally. The positive impact of advanced Nurse Practitioners on clinical and service-related outcomes has been highlighted throughout the literature, with new research routinely being done. The research currently suggests that patient satisfaction, waiting times, control of chronic disease, and cost-effectiveness of Nurse Practitioner led services are more favourable, especially when directly compared to medical practitioner-led care*
